Matsumoto

Museum Matsumoto-jo Castle, an excellent castle, is the dominant attraction in Matsumoto. The town is also a convenient base for exploration of the Japan Alps. Matsumoto dates back to the 8th Century, and went on to become the castle town of the Ogasawara clan during the 14th and 15th centuries. Although it continued to prosper during the Edo period (1600-1868), it seemed to have slowed down somewhere along the way, as it is a rather laid-back city now. Apart from Matsumoto-jo Castle, the town does offer several museums, such as the Japan Folklore Museum and the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum.

Visitors can fly from Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Osaka, and Sapporo to reach Matsumoto. The town is also connected to Nagano via the JR Shinonoi line. The Azusa limited express from Shinjuku station in Tokyo does pass by this way too.
