Decentralization of Power (220-589) The decentralization of power in China brought about terrible wars and chaos in China, which lasted for hundreds of years. During this period, China was divided into three main kingdoms: the Wei in the area north of the Yangzi River, the Wu in the south, and the Shu to the west. Among the three, the western Wei was the most efficient in terms of its administrative system and accumulated wealth. In 577, it even defeated its rival in the north. However, in 581, one of its own generals seized power and established the Sui Dynasty. By 589, the Sui had conquered southern China and the country was once again united under a single government.
