Sui Dynasty (589-618) The Sui Dynasty governed China from AD 589 to 618. Its emperor, Yang Jian, was also known as 'Wendi', which translates as the 'Cultivated Emperor'. Throughout its short reign, this dynasty had contributed much in the areas of administration, civil service, and land reformation. Along with the revisions of law codes, this dynasty provided a strong base for the institutions of the Tang Dynasty. However, the Sui Dynasty declined under the rule of Yang Jian's son, Yangdi. Although he was recognized and given credit for strategically restoring important sections of the Great Wall as well as establishing the Grand Canal, his unsuccessful intrusion into Korea had placed an enormous burden on national funds, which led to a major rebellion against himself and the government. Hence the downfall of the Sui Dynasty.
