Gay and Lesbian Nightlife

There are many establishments that cater to the needs of the homosexual society although they form only a minor group in Hong Kong's overall population. Mostly located in Central, these bars and clubs do welcome foreigners. Other small karaoke bars are also available although the help of locals for their whereabouts is much needed.

Theater

Theater is also popular in Hong Kong. The city plays host to extravagant overseas productions, as well as home-grown dramas. Examples of some internationally acclaimed performances include Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Most local theaters are in Western form, though not necessarily in its themes.

There are several profound theaters in Hong Kong. The Chung Ying Theatre Company is one such example. It features new plays by Hong Kong writers, which offers an insight into contemporary urban life. Other notable theaters include the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, which emphasizes original Chinese works, and the Fringe Club, which features a host of avant-garde performances, especially during the popular City Festival in January.

Movies

Hong Kong's film industry is on the rise with the success of films such as Chungking Express and Rumble in the Bronx. Local directors like John Woo, Wong Kar Wai, and Tsui Hark, along with actors and actresses like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fatt, and Michelle Yeoh have opened the Asian screen to ultimate Hollywood productions. Cine Art House, Broadway Cinematheque, and the Hong Kong Arts Centre frequently show an impressive array of Chinese and Western Blockbusters. In spring, the Hong Kong International Film Festival brings together films and documentaries from around the world, and many local Asian filmmakers are eminently featured.
