Holy Hall of Martial and Literary Arts

The hall is dedicated to the deity Kuan Kung and his literary cohort, Confucius. The three-story Taoist temple is on Fu-Yeh Street. The ground floor is a shrine specially devoted to the martial deities with a few finely crafted altar tables. The second floor is for Confucius with his name etched on regal stone steles. The upper floor is where the Jade Emperor and his celestial entourage reside. Wall frescoes and extreme ceiling works add a touch of beauty to the shrine.

Shrine of the Three Mountain Kings

A short distance from the Holy Hall is the Shrine of the Three Mountain Kings. The Buddhist shrine, on Yeh-Huang Street, is 300-years-old, and commemorates three brothers who were private tutors to a man who saved the life of the Chinese emperor. The man gave credit to these three teachers when rewarded by the emperor and the emperor then made each brother 'King of the Mountain' in three regions of Fujian province. The heavenly shrine hall contains a dozen deities in an intricate display of brilliant ornamentation.

Little Harbor

Little Harbor, about 10km south from downtown is a 'garage' for scraps of old ships. Kaohsiung is the world's largest scrapper of old ships. Each year, about 200 ships are dismounted and parts of the ships are harvested here in Little Harbor. Visitors, who are lucky enough to be in this area when ships are being scrapped, can sometimes get good bargains on lanterns, clocks, and nautical artifacts.

Chichin Beach

This rather unusual black-sand beach is isolated from the commotion of downtown Kaohsiung, but also from the murky waters of the harbor. Chichin beach is located on the seaward side of a long island that forms a breakwater for the harbor. Swimmers can get there by taking a four-minute ferry ride from a small pier next to the entrance of Pin-Hai fishing wharf. Next to the beach is a Taoist temple dedicated to Hwa-to, father of medicine.
