Melbourne was settled in 1835 and named after the 19th Century British Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. Its rapid growth was accelerated in the 1850s by the huge inrush of immigrants seeking their fortunes on the rich gold fields of Victoria. This caused a population explosion of unprecedented proportions as prospectors decided to stay in the city. Today, Melbourne is the home of over three million people including more than 70 language groups and the largest Greek-speaking population outside of Greece. The capital state of Victoria and Australia's second largest metropolis is known around the world for its Melbourne Cup horserace, trams, exquisite Victorian architecture, performing and fine arts, eloquent and exciting fashion, great sports such as tennis and football, as well as its modern skyscrapers.
