You
can never buy enough from Hong Kong. The country offers an amazing
array of things to buy, which will astonish even the most seasoned
traveler. All items, from electrical goods to ancient works of art,
clothes to jewelry, are equally affordable and contemporary to satisfy
even the most fanatical trendsetter.
Hong
Kong is the world's fourth largest exporter of jewelry and it boasts
more jewelry shops per square kilometer than any other city. These
high-quality, reasonably priced metals are good buys in Hong Kong
because of the country's free-port status. Jewelry in all forms
- gold, diamonds, pearls - abound in shops and department stores.
A
particularly popular item among the Chinese is the jade, which is
believed to have great spiritual values. Carved into shapes, such
as a dragons or deer, it denotes power and wealth. When purchasing
jade, it is advisable to shop with someone who has experiences in
buying jade or who knows where to get good quality pieces. Another
sought after item is the bright yellow 24-karat gold called chuk
kam, which is the God of Wealth. Shops that specialize in the production
of chuk kam are usually packed and buyers often bid for the item.
Pearls are also good buys in Hong Kong. They come in all shapes,
sizes, and colors.
You
may choose to create your own jewelry according to your own designs
and type of metals used. Many shops sell gem-set-jewelry and also
cater to the customer's own designs. These days, bargaining is not
a common practice in jewelry shops, but one can always try!
