From the mysterious Oriental symbolism of Noh drama to the glittering neon lights of the cabarets, clubs and discos, Japan offers a mix of modern and traditional entertainment, catering to a wide range of tastes and interests. A wealth of entertainment opportunities awaits the adventurous, the curious and the fun seeking. Here's a little something for everyone! Night Life Live houses and bars are the cheapest nightlife option for travelers and foreign residents in Japan. These are also the best places for travelers to meet young Japanese in a casual environment. Few have entry charges, and for those that do, a drink is usually offered with each entry. Drink prices vary, but are generally around ¥500 for a beer and ¥700 for spirits. Do check out these live houses as they are also hot spots for live performances by local bands. Performances tend to start and end early in the evening, however. To find out more about them, pick up copies of the Tokyo Journal and Kansai Time Out. Clubs & Discos For those with an inclination to spend money, clubs offer a slightly more expensive and more commercialized night out. Cover charges can be as high as ¥4000 to ¥5000 and are usually inclusive of two or three drinks. However, with some effort, a few establishments can be found in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka and Sapporo that do not require a cover charge on Friday and Saturday nights. These places can provide a good clubbing experience without putting a strain on your travel budget.
