Taipa is an international gateway for Macau and the Pearl River Delta. Once a rural retreat, the island now has a runway built on reclaimed land, and is home to the Macau International Airport. Air Macau is the major airline service here, providing regular services to major cities in China, Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, and Europe. Taipa Monument Situated at the end of the old Macau-Taipa Bridge is this monument that covers the hillside with carvings of historic symbols of Macau. It is floodlit at night. Visitors will be able to admire some very good views atop the cliff. Taipa Village The village of Taipa consists of small temples and shrines, a colonial church, and narrow streets lined with China Coast shop-houses, where families live upstairs a shop or office. The village boasts of a diversity of restaurants serving Portuguese, Macanese, Indian, Italian, and Chinese delicacies. Taipa House Museum Built in the 1920s, this colonial mansion contains original or reproduced furniture, displaying the blend of cultures, such as a Portuguese prayer desk, Chinese blackwood chairs, a piano, and large charcoal-burning oven with holes for different pots. The museum opens daily, except on Mondays, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Po Tai Un Temple Behind the Hyatt Regency hotel is the Po Tai Un temple, which until today offers vegetarian meals to visitors. The priests grow their own vegetables in the temple gardens to serve in their simple restaurant that occupies a spacious verandah. Dishes are very cheap, probably the lowest in town. There are no menus; visitors should either point to what others are eating or let the server decide for you. The temple also contains a centuries old shrine to the goddess of mercy and a series of new pavilions and statues, which are donated by worshippers. Our Lady Of Carmel The chapel, overlooking the sea, was built in 1885. It has been constantly refurbished since then. It sits on the hill between Taipa Praia and the village, and has beautiful ornamental gardens with fountains, flowerbeds, and quiet corners with benches.
