From enchanting
markets exploding with bargains to the world's most exclusive brands,
Sydney has something to tempt every shopper. The city's busy shopping
arcades are within walking distance from one another. Cosmopolitan Pitt
Street Mall is home to arcades filled with superb gifts, fashion and food,
as well as friendly staff. The Strand Arcade accommodates the stylish
Glasshouse and Skygarden complexes. Queen Victoria Building spreads over
four wonderful floors and is the jewel in the Sydney shopping crowns.
It houses over 200 specialty stores and many restaurants and cafes.
David Jones
in Elizabeth Street is well known for its spring and Mother's Day floral
displays as well as the luxurious perfumery and cosmetics. Grace Bros
is a good venue for cosmetics, hats, Australian fashion, lingerie and
hosiery while Gowings carries a large range of quality menswear, sunglasses,
watches, and Swiss army knives.
Duty-free
shops are found in the center of the city as well as at Kingsford Smith
Airport. Some shops also have branches in the larger suburbs. Overseas
visitors will need proper identification such as the presentation of a
valid passport in order to purchase these types of goods. For more cheerful
and colorful shopping, check out Balmain Market, which is held each Saturday.
A food hall selling Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Indian dishes forms part
of the market. The Beach Bondi Market is well known for its second-hand
clothing as well as its cactus plants, glassware, and tourist art. The
Rocks Market, held every weekend under a canopy, has up to 140 participating
stalls selling posters, lace, stained glass, and leather goods.
The Sydney
Fish Market will be the place to look for fresh seafood. Over 100 species
of live and prepared seafood can be found here. The Tarpeian Market on
Sundays displays arts and crafts in a spectacular setting next to the
Opera House. From porcelain to healing crystals, this market offers the
uncommon not found in departmental stores.
